Ancestry Explained

So guess where we were the other day?

In the car.

As usual.

Ben starts talking about family relationships. He whips through all the current relationships---moms, dads, grandparents, etc., then starts to move onto territory a little more unfamiliar to him. This is always where the fun begins.

First he informs me that he has high hopes that I might live long enough to see him grow up and get married. He has been a little preoccupied lately with my life expectancy; some days he's not sure I'll make it through the night. I reassure him that I'm planning on sticking around until he's grown up and gets married.

That little detail taken care of, he moves on to step number two. He has this one figured out. "Mommy, when I have children, those children will be your grandchildren. If you are still alive. If you are not alive, though, you can still be their ancestor."

And that, my friends, is where ancestors come from.
